ILP SPRING

2025

The Most Epic Summer Literally Ever Living in the Dominican Republic

What is ILP?

(International Language Program)

Housing

Teaching

Leisure

For a fee of about $4,000 ILP gives you and 15-20 volunteers the ability to move to another country for 3-4 months. During this time housing, food, and amenities are provided for you. Without their help it would be nearly impossible to sustain ones self, especially in these third world/developing countries.

While abroad, you are expected to teach English to the children of that country for 15-20 hours per week. Volunteering includes training on the ILP Method of teaching. Volunteers may teach children 2-15 years old in various group sizes. Volunteers  are expected to plan and execute their own lessons using only English.

Working with ILP gives volunteers freedom to explore their country. Besides the hours accounted for teaching, you are able to spend your time as you please. Three vacations totaling 13 days are included in free time. ILP offers many resources for volunteers to be able to see as much as they can.

Why The D.R?

The Location

I always wanted to live by the ocean so the option of volunteering on an island was a no-brainer for me. I was also looking for the opportunity to improve my Spanish, so that quickly narrowed down my choice!

The Best Island in the World

Volunteers live in the province of Puerto Plata. My group lived in Javillar, one of the most impoverished cities on the island. Javillar is only a 30-minute walk from the beach (and a 5 minute drive)! The locals are charming, welcoming, and love their wonderful city.

The People

Some groups with ILP are as small as 3-4 people. I knew that whoever I was assigned to live with, I was going to have to deal with for the entirety of the trip. So, I opted for the trip with the largest group size to improve my chances.

My Group

At the very beginning of the trip, my group was the biggest struggle that I faced. I have never been surrounded by more people who were insanely different from me. The first month or two there were about 4 cliques that made up our house that did not mingle.

However, through the course of the trip, we were able to grow closer. This was because of many hard times that fell on our group and our community. After those events, we became one group, and the rest of our trip was more fun than I thought it would’ve been.

The Highlights

Countless Beach Trips

Someday I want to move back to the beach! I had so much fun there collecting shells, tanning, and swimming.

Dominican Food

Though not my favorite genre of food, Dominican food will always have a place in my heart. Even though they use way too much mayo.

Crazy Kids

I taught some of the funniest kids on the planet and I hope I never forget all of their names. They were so sweet and kind to us.

Endless Activities

Beyond just the beach we did so many fun things. I had no idea there was so much to do like waterfalls, hikes, natural pools, and rafting!

Over all,

I loved my time with ILP. I think those 4 months in the Dominican Republic were some of the most impactful time of my life. The entire trip was full of countless miracles. I hope to never forget the people that I met there and their kindness to us. It taught me so much about finding joy in my life and seeing the beauty of God’s creation. 4 months later and I still miss the children I taught so much!
